THE EASY & SMART WAY TO BET THE RACES

1/ST BET helps you learn how to bet, how to make smarter bets, and helps you make more winning bets.

Horse race betting factors to help you make smarter bets.

The 1/ST BET app uses more than 50 betting factors in evaluating each horse in a race, drawing from a library of more than 200,000 previous races to match past success with future success. Depending on the situation, such as the distance of the current race, each of the 50+ factors can take on varying degrees of importance. But don’t be intimidated by how to bet; the ease of the 1/ST BET app replaces years of study that once intimidated newer horseplayers.

The app automatically matches and ranks the proven, most successful betting factors in each race, and also gives you the ability to select your own set of factors to make personalized, artificial intelligence-based selections in mere seconds. For a better understanding of each factor, we’ve grouped them in the categories below to explain their function.

SPEED

The idea has always been to bet on the horse who gets to the finish line fastest. Selecting that horse is made easier by measuring the horse’s speed in previous races. Because races are of different distances and at different racetracks, the raw time of a race is not a tell-all indicator. Therefore, a speed ‘rating’ or speed ‘number’ is created to adjust for just how fast or slow a race was actually run. The 1/ST BET app measures a horse’s speed in several ways, and in most situations, the speed category possesses the most important and telling factors to consider.

Best Lifetime Speed Number: This is the best speed number the horse has run in its lifetime regardless of distance, surface, or track condition.

Speed Last Race: This number represents the speed number earned by the horse in his most recent race.

Best Speed Last 3: When considering the horse’s last three races, this is the highest number earned in those three.

Avg. Speed Last 3: Takes the speed numbers earned by the horse in his last three starts and averages them for a measurement of consistency.

Avg. Best 2 of Last 3: This factor looks at the last 3 races, finds the best 2 speed numbers of the three and averages those. This can be a powerful factor since it tosses the lowest number, which may have been due to circumstances beyond a horse’s control.

Best Speed Number at Today’s Track: Represents the fastest number run by the horse at the track at which he is competing today. Some horses perform better at one track vs. another, known as a “horse for the course.”

Best Speed Distance: The highest speed number earned by the horse when running at today’s distance. If today’s distance is 1 mile, this number would represent the best speed number this horse has earned running a 1 mile-race.

Best Speed Fast Track: The highest speed number earned by the horse when running on a fast dirt track. Fast tracks are usually dry tracks with little to no rain. Use this betting factor sparingly when the track is rated muddy or sloppy.

Best Speed Off Track: The highest speed figure earned by the horse when running on an “Off Track” – wet tracks are most often labeled ‘muddy’ or ‘sloppy.’ Use sparingly when the track is ‘fast’ (dry).

Best Speed Turf: The horse’s best speed number on a turf (grass) surface. Useful if today’s race is contested on grass vs. dirt.

Best Speed All Weather: The highest speed number earned by the horse when running on a synthetic, ‘all-weather’ surface. Only used at the following racetracks: Golden Gate Fields, Turfway Park, Woodbine, Arlington Park and Presque Isle Downs.

RECORDS

Just like team sports, a horse’s won-loss record can be a measurement of future success. Consider how frequently a horse wins and/or finishes in the top 3 (“in the money”) of his races. The top performing horses in each race receive a cash prize - the better the race, the bigger the ‘purse’ or prize pool. The more significant the race and order of finish, the greater the horse’s purse earnings. A horse’s race record will often be referred to in horse racing as his ‘form.’ The betting factors below will help you learn to bet horse racing based on individual horse’s form and previous races.

Win Percent: The percentage of races the horse has won in his career.

In The Money Percent: The percentage of times the horse has finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd in his career.

Last Finish Position: The finish position of the horse in his most recent race.

Horses beaten (% average placement last 5 races):  This number looks at which position a horse finished in a race and determines how many horses he beat in that race. For example, a horse who finishes 2nd in a 10-horse race defeats 8 horses, or 80% of the field. That’s more impressive than a horse who finishes 2nd in a 6-horse field and defeats 4 horses, or 67% of the field. A horse who is defeating a larger percentage of horses in his races is competing at a level where he is competitive.

Avg. Lifetime Earnings: A dollar figure that represents the average amount the horse has earned per start for his career. This figure includes all races without regard to track, surface, condition, etc.

Avg. Earnings Today’s Track: Dollar figure represents the average amount the horse has earned per start when running at the same track as today’s race.

Avg. Earnings Today’s Distance: This is a dollar figure representing the avg. amount the horse has earned per start when running at the same distance as today’s race.

Avg. Off Track Earnings: Dollar figure represents the average amount the horse has earned per start when running on an ‘off track’ – wet tracks that are most often labeled ‘muddy’ or ‘sloppy.’

Avg. Turf Earnings: Dollar figure represents the average amount the horse has earned per start when running on the turf (grass).

Avg. All Weather Earnings: Dollar figure represents the average amount the horse has earned per start when running on a synthetic, ‘all-weather’ surface. Only used at the following racetracks: Golden Gate Fields, Turfway Park, Woodbine, Arlington Park and Presque Isle Downs.

RUNNING STYLE

‘Pace Makes the Race’ is a frequent expression heard around the racetrack and it signifies the importance of a horse’s signature running styles as to the outcome of a race. Just like most things in life, how fast you start or how fast you finish is a vital balance. The 1/ST BET app measures each horse’s performance at various points in his previous races in its evaluation of pace.

Last E1 Pace: This number represents how fast the horse ran (E)arly from the start in his most recent race. E1 pace by itself will give you a good idea of which horses will be leading early, and help you determine how the race may shape up.

Last E2 Pace: This number represents how fast the horse ran (E)arly from the start in his most recent race and beyond the mid-way point in the race. This gives an evaluation of which early front-runners may sustain their speed farther into today’s race.

Last Turn Time: This number represents how fast the horse ran in the middle stages of a race, and is calculated by subtracting the E1 pace number from the E2 pace number.

Avg. Of Last 3 E1 Pace: Represents the average of the last 3 E1 pace figures the horse has earned.

Avg. Of Last 3 E2 Pace: Represents the average of the last 3 E2 pace figures the horse has earned.

Avg. Of Last 3 Turn Times: Represents the average of the last 3 turn time figures the horse has earned.

Last Late Pace: Represents how fast the horse ran at the end of his most recent race. Late pace is often a big factor in turf (grass) races and in dirt races that are expected to have a fast early pace that could tire out competitors.

Avg. Of Last 3 Late Pace: Represents the average of the last 3 late pace figures the horse has earned.

TRAINER/JOCKEY

The human ‘connections’ surrounding each horse are its owner, trainer and jockey. The trainer and jockey’s past success play a major role in the selection process. The 1/ST BET app accounts for both key team members and evaluates their performance at today’s track and over a varying length of time. Like many sports trends, it sometimes pays to follow the team on a recent hot streak, or support those with sustained success.

Trainer Current Meet: A ‘meet’ is a general term to describe one racetrack’s current season. A meet at Santa Anita, for instance, may span from December through June. This number tells you the percentage of races that the trainer has won at this particular racetrack during the current local season.

Jockey Current Meet: Similar to the trainer, this number tells you the percentage of races that the jockey has won at this particular racetrack during the current local season.

Trainer Jockey Combo Win% Meet: Factor indicates the winning percentage when the trainer and jockey have been teamed together in previous races at the current local season.

Trainer Jockey Combo ROI Meet: Factor indicates the relative profitability of betting the jockey and trainer when they’ve teamed together in previous races at the current local season. The “Return On Investment” is a dollar amount for how much you would have received for betting $2 to win on each horse previously raced by this trainer-jockey combination.

Trainer-Jockey Win % 2 yrs: Factor indicates the winning percentage when the trainer and jockey have been teamed together in all previous races over the last 2 years.

Jockey Win % 1 Year: Calculates winning percentage for the jockey over the last 365 days at all racetracks.

Jockey Current Year: Calculates winning percentage for the jockey since Jan 1 at all racetracks.

Trainer Win % 1 Year: Calculates winning percentage for the trainer over the last 365 days at all racetracks.

Trainer Current Year: Calculates winning percentage for the jockey since Jan 1 at all racetracks.

Jockey Win % 6 mo: Calculates winning percentage for the jockey over the past 6 months at all racetracks.

Trainer Win % 6 mo: Calculates winning percentage for the trainer over the past 6 months at all racetracks.

Jockey Win % 2 yrs This Race Type: Calculates winning percentage for the jockey over the past 2 years for this race type (distance, surface, class).

Trainer Win % 2 yrs This Race Type: Calculates winning percentage for the trainer over the past 2 years for this race type (distance, surface, class).

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

The term ‘class’ in horse racing is synonymous with ‘quality’ and is similar to strength of schedule if you follow sports. Identifying the class or strength of schedule can help you determine which horses are racing against easier or more difficult competition today. The 1/ST BET app considers both the previous horses and purse levels of previous races in determining its class factors.

Last Race Class: The Class value of a race is computed by looking at all the horses in a race.  1/ST BET looks at how fast those horses have run in their careers, over the last few races, how much they have earned lifetime and recently, as well as the purse values of the races they have been running in.  The Class factor is a comprehensive view of how good the horses in a race were.  The last Race Class value is for the most recent race.

Avg. Last 3 Race Classes:  The average class value for the last 3 races the horse has run in.

Last Purse: The purse value of the most recent race the horse was in.

Average Last 3 Purses: The average of the last three purse values of the races the horse was in.

PEDIGREE

Racehorses are bred for speed, and the breeders try to match up parents that will produce successful racehorses. Some families are known for certain traits, for instance a preference for running shorter or longer distances, or traits that give a horse an affinity for a particular racing surface (such as dirt or turf, wet tracks), etc. A horse’s family history is known as his pedigree, and The 1/ST BET app considers those pedigree traits in its evaluation. Pedigree can be an important consideration when a horse has not raced many times yet in his career or is trying something new for the first time.

Dirt Pedigree Rating: Measures the quality and suitability of the horse's breeding for races run on the dirt. Based on an analysis of hundreds of thousands of starts in North America, each start of all offspring from the Sire (father), Dam (mother), and Damsire (maternal grandfather) are evaluated and measured for their individual racing aptitudes and preferences.

Mud Pedigree Rating: Measures the quality and suitability of the horse's breeding for races run on an ‘off track’ – wet tracks that are most often labeled ‘muddy’ or ‘sloppy.’

Turf Pedigree Rating: Measures the quality and suitability of the horse's breeding for races run on the turf (grass).

Distance Pedigree Rating: Measures the quality and suitability of the horse's breeding for races run at today’s distance.

FITNESS

Horses are not machines; their level of fitness can fluctuate based on how much time they have had between races, due to natural breaks in the racing calendar and health considerations. The 1/ST BET app considers both the time between races and the amount of morning workout exercise a horse has performed.

Days Since Last Race: The number of days since the horse's most recent start. Healthy horses generally race every 3-8 weeks. A longer winter break is not uncommon for higher-quality horses between racing seasons.

Distance Worked Since Last Race: This factor looks at the combined distance of the morning workouts for a horse since his most recent race.  If the horse worked 3 furlongs, 4 furlongs and 5 furlongs since his most recent race, he would have a total of 12 furlongs of work.
